Operate an excavator in winter, these 3 things must be remembered.

01
Adequate Preheating

Before starting the excavator, it is essential to thoroughly preheat it, especially in winter. Due to thermal expansion and contraction, the gap between various parts of the excavator is too large when the engine is cold. Insufficient preheating can accelerate part wear. Moreover, due to the low temperature, the viscosity of the engine oil is too high, which can prevent it from adequately lubricating. This can even lead to fractures in the plunger spring, valve spring, and injector spring due to "cold brittleness."

02
Timely Drainage of Cooling Water

In winter, particularly in northern regions where outdoor temperatures are very low, if the cooling water is drained too early, the engine body will cool rapidly and is likely to crack. Additionally, if the cooling water isn't drained in time, it could freeze inside the engine. Since ice is less dense than water, the freezing of the cooling water can easily cause the engine body to crack. Therefore, the best practice is to wait until the temperature of the cooling water drops below 60 degrees Celsius before draining it.

03
Pay Attention to Insulation of the Engine Body

Generally, if the external temperature is too low, insulation covers and curtains are installed on the diesel engine to maintain normal operation. Some operators, for convenience, do not implement these cold protection measures adequately, which can easily damage the diesel engine.

Therefore, after entering winter, it's even more crucial to pay attention to the maintenance of the excavator. Only by performing regular maintenance can the excavator be less prone to damage and have a longer lifespan.
