What are the causes of cylinder discoloration in pile drivers?

After using a pile driver for some time, you may notice that the color of the cylinder changes. Initially, it may be blue, but over time, it deepens to purple and may eventually turn black. This color change is actually due to a colored film forming on the surface of the cylinder and is not related to the pile driver or the cylinder itself, so you can continue to use it without worry. However, there are reasons behind this discoloration. Let's analyze the causes:

1. High Temperature in the Hydraulic System:

The hydraulic system of the pile driver experiences high temperatures, especially in winter. During operation, the piston rod works under high temperatures and frequently comes into contact with the low-temperature environment outside.

2. Use of Non-Specialized Hydraulic Oil:

Although regular maintenance is a good habit, using hydraulic oil that is not specifically designed for pile drivers can cause discoloration within a few days. Different brands and types of hydraulic oils have varying qualities and performances of extreme pressure and anti-wear additives.

3. Causes of Color Changes:

Blue Color: Caused by the additives in the oil seals and hydraulic oil adhering to the cylinder rod at high temperatures.

Black Color: Caused by lead-containing additives in the wear-resistant sleeve's spray coating adhering to the cylinder rod at high temperatures.
