How to Deal with Collapses Encountered by Small Pile Drivers

In the process of using small pile drivers, most will encounter the issue of hole collapse. When we face this problem, how can we determine whether a hole collapse has occurred and how to deal with it? Today's editor from Hengwang Group will discuss this with you. During the small-scale grouting process of a small pile driver, if you notice a sudden rise in the mud level in the wellbore mud, spilling over the casing, followed by a sudden drop and the appearance of bubbles, then the possibility of a hole collapse should be considered. We can use a sounding hammer for detection. If the depth measuring hammer initially hangs on the surface of the concrete but cannot be lifted or embedded, or if it cannot reach the original depth when detecting the concrete surface, showing many differences, it can be proven as a hole collapse. Hole collapse in pile drivers may be due to water leakage around the bottom of the casing, a decrease in the water level in the hole or tidal river, a reduction in the difference in water levels inside the hole during high tide, inability to maintain the original hydrostatic pressure, heavy objects stacked around the casing, or vibrations caused by the pile driver. After identifying the cause of the hole collapse, corresponding measures should be taken, such as maintaining or increasing the head of water, removing heavy objects, eliminating vibrations, etc., to prevent the hole collapse from continuing; then use a mud suction machine to extract the mud that has collapsed into the hole. If the hole collapse ceases to occur, it means normal grouting has been restored. If the hole collapse is not severe, it can be backfilled above the collapse location, and measures like improving mud properties, increasing the head of water, and deepening the casing can be taken to continue drilling; in severe cases of hole collapse, all drilling should be immediately backfilled with sand or small gravel mixed with clay, and the operation of the small pile driver should be paused. After a while, the cause of the hole collapse should be identified, and corresponding measures taken to re-drill.

Small pile drivers inevitably encounter various problems during work. It's important to pay attention to accumulating and dealing with these issues regularly. Hopefully, the above content is helpful to you.
