Maintenance and Care of Rotary Drilling Rig Power Head Reducer

The power head reducer of a rotary drilling rig is one of the key parts to maintain during use, as its working condition directly affects the performance of the rotary drilling rig. Therefore, it should be maintained properly.

1. Lubrication oil level

Due to the high-speed rotation of internal gears and bearings during operation, all moving parts must be sufficiently and cleanly lubricated, otherwise, the transmission parts will fail prematurely, causing system paralysis. The oil level and cleanliness of the lubrication oil in the reducer should always be monitored during use. If the oil level is below the specified level, it should be replenished immediately, and the lubrication oil should be replaced in time if it is too dirty.

2. Temperature of the lubrication oil

When the reducer operates in high temperatures during summer or outputs continuous high power, the oil temperature can be very high. Ordinary lubrication oil's lubricating performance and oil film quality significantly decrease above 100°C, leading to increased wear on internal gears and bearings and early pitting on gears, affecting the service life. This can be resolved by choosing higher-grade lubrication oil and shortening the oil change cycle, or by adding external oil pipes at two plug positions to force circulation and cool the lubrication oil.

3. Vent hole

A vent hole is located at the top of the reducer to ensure pressure balance inside and outside the reducer during operation, so it is essential to keep the vent hole clear and free from obstructions. When the surrounding environment has a lot of dust, cover it with a mesh or replace it with a better performance air filter. If the vent hole is blocked, the internal pressure of the reducer increases, causing lubrication oil to leak from the input or output end's oil seal, leading to oil level drop and environmental pollution.

4. Connecting bolts

When working, the reducer outputs a large torque and is under long-term impact and vibration, which can easily loosen the connecting bolts of the reducer and the bolts connecting the reducer to peripheral systems. Therefore, it is important to timely check and tighten all connecting bolts (elastic pads should be added at the connecting bolt locations or other reliable anti-loosening measures should be taken).

Common faults and troubleshooting methods for the power head reducer of a rotary drilling rig

1. The input end of the reducer rotates while the output end does not rotate, or the rotation speed is significantly lower than normal.

This is mainly due to internal transmission parts issues, often gear teeth breakage or shaft breakage. This fault can only be resolved by disassembling the reducer and replacing the relevant parts.

2. Both input and output ends of the reducer cannot rotate.

There are two methods to troubleshoot this situation: one is to reverse the motor or engine at the input end to see if it is feasible, and repair or replace as needed; the second is to disassemble the reducer (internal bearing damage causing it to not operate) and replace the corresponding parts.

3. The noise and vibration of the reducer are significantly higher than normal values.
